Privacy Policy

Short version: Base Reality does not use cookies, does not build user profiles, and does not sell data. The site collects minimal anonymous analytics to understand readership. That's it.

Who We Are

Base Reality (base-reality.org) is an independent publication of analytical essays and reports on technology, labor markets, and structural power dynamics. It is operated by Shourya Maheshwari as a sole-author project.

What Data We Collect

Analytics (Vercel Web Analytics)

This site uses Vercel Web Analytics, a privacy-first analytics tool. It collects anonymous, aggregated data about page views — specifically:

  • Pages visited and referrer URL
  • Browser and operating system type (general category, not fingerprint)
  • Country-level location derived from IP address
  • Approximate device type (desktop, mobile, tablet)

Vercel Analytics does not use cookies, does not track individual users across sessions, does not fingerprint browsers, and does not store IP addresses. Data is aggregated and cannot be traced back to any individual visitor. No consent banner is required for this type of analytics under GDPR.

Article Content (Supabase)

Article metadata (titles, publish dates, read times) is stored in a Supabase database and fetched when you load the homepage. This is a read-only operation — no data about you is sent to or stored in the database when you visit.

Third-Party Services

Loading pages on this site causes your browser to make requests to the following third-party services. Each may receive your IP address as part of the standard HTTP request:

These services receive your IP address as a byproduct of delivering resources. Base Reality does not control their data practices. Refer to each provider's privacy policy for details.

Cookies

Base Reality does not set any cookies for tracking or advertising purposes. The only data stored in your browser is a single localStorage key — base-reality-theme — which remembers your light/dark mode preference. This data never leaves your browser and is not transmitted to any server.

What We Do Not Do

  • We do not sell, share, or rent any data to third parties
  • We do not run advertising networks or retargeting pixels
  • We do not collect email addresses or run mailing lists (unless explicitly added in future)
  • We do not build profiles of individual visitors
  • We do not use cross-site tracking technologies

Your Rights (GDPR / UK GDPR)

Because Base Reality does not collect personal data about visitors, there is little to exercise rights over. However, if you have any concern about data that may relate to you, you have the right to:

  • Request confirmation of whether any personal data concerning you is processed
  • Request deletion of any such data
  • Lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority (in the EU, your national data protection authority; in the UK, the ICO)

Data Retention

Vercel Analytics retains aggregated, anonymous usage data per Vercel's data retention policies. As no personal data is collected, there is no personal data retention timeline applicable to visitors.

Children's Privacy

This site is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect any personal data from children.

Changes to This Policy

This policy may be updated if the site's data practices change — for example, if a contact form, newsletter, or comment system is added. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will reflect any changes. Continued use of the site after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
